Pivots 05: How to make an Excel Pivot Chart

Video Lesson 5

Add Charts, more data, and a Combo Chart

Our Pivot table is slightly modified (we take out the Grand Total for Mondays and Sundays combined) and we insert a Column Chart which illustrates more clearly what the numbers in the table are telling us.

"A picture is worth a thousand words" - use Charts:

The Pivot table contains all the information we need – just read the numbers. But it is often very helpful to illustrate the numbers in Charts. and a Pivot Chart is extremely flexible. Whenever you change the filters in your table, or update it, the Chart changes automatically.

We saw in our table that the average rainfall per hour over the 5 month period was much higher on Mondays than on Sundays, but the Chart makes it very clear that this is not the case for every month!

The video shows you how, and we can now answer the question in a more advanced manner:
Does it rain more on Sundays than on Mondays, during the day?

Answer:
NO –  It does NOT rain more on Sundays, during the day.
“The Grand Total displayed for the 5 months show that Mondays are much more rainy during day than Sundays. The chart makes it very clear that this was not the case in May and July, but due to heavy Monday rain in June and  August, Mondays come out wetter for the period”.

If you have not already done so, download the Excel file, unzip it on your computer and open it in Excel. Then experiment with the Pivot table, changing the filters to show other information, and try to make it show average Outdoor Temperatures in stead of average Rainfall.

Combo Chart, and decoration

We use a Pivot Table displaying temperature, wind and rainfall every hour for a given date, and create a Combo Chart to display all this this data combined.

And we show you how to “decorate” the chart with an attractive layout and custom titles and labels.
